AC Transit is proud to support the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community, including AC Transit’s own LGBTQ+ employees and their families. Additionally, the District is committed to providing a work environment free from all forms of unlawful employment discrimination, including sexual and other forms of harassment while fostering an organizational culture of inclusiveness with a diverse workforce. Support of external events and organizations is one of the many ways in which the District demonstrates its core values and commitment to equity.
BUDGETARY/FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no budgetary or fiscal impact associated with the adoption of this resolution.
BACKGROUND/RATIONALE:
On August 11, Director Jovanka Beckles requested that a resolution in support of Oakland Pride be brought forth to the Board of Directors for consideration. The Oakland Pride Festival has been held in Oakland since September 5, 2010 and is now celebrating its 11th year. The mission of Oakland Pride to celebrate the cultures and diversity of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community in Oakland and the East Bay. Oakland Pride is dedicated to educating the greater community and promoting equality, civic involvement and responsibility within Oakland; and Oakland Pride is committed to facilitating leadership and coalition building for the funding and development of the first LGBTQ+ community center in Oakland for everyone.
This year’s Oakland Pride celebration will take place on Saturday, September 12th in Downtown Oakland. A parade will be held along Broadway between 14th and 20th Streets. Following the parade, the festival will take place along Webster Street.
ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES:
This is an opportunity for the District to reaffirm its commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. There are no known disadvantages to the adoption of the resolution.
ALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS:
The Board can choose to not adopt the attached resolution in support of Oakland Pride.
