BACKGROUND/RATIONALE:

The East Bay Bus Rapid Transit Policy Steering Committee was initially established in 1998 to oversee the District's Major Investment Study and to make recommendations to the AC Transit Board of Directors for investments in the Berkeley-Oakland-San Leandro corridor. Over the years, the Committee has met at key junctures in project decision-making such as the selection of alignment, mode and design treatments in each city. Throughout the construction of what is now known as the Line 1 Tempo service, the Committee provided valuable input and insight into all aspects of project development and served to address issues raised by key stakeholders, which ultimately helped ensure the project's success.

For over two decades, elected officials from the cities of Oakland, San Leandro and Berkeley as well as representatives from Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and County of Alameda gave their time and energy to finish the project, and their contributions are reflected in every aspect of the new service. The District wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to all current and former members of the Policy Steering Committee for their fortitude and commitment to building a world class transit service for residents of the East Bay.

Now that the work of the Policy Steering Committee is complete and the Tempo service is operational, staff is recommending that the Board dissolve the Committee. Through the efforts of President Ortiz, the groundwork has already begun...
